The road from Rivington to Belmount is usually a pleasant and scenic drive. On the 1st January 2021, it was anything but pleasant. We waited at the start of the ascend on the Rivington, as drivers in cars of all types tried to power their way up the snow-filled, icy road. The panic as they started to slide backwards as their wheels spun.

Once it was clear we made our way up, slow and steady – just keeping traction. What awaited us was a glorious vista, Winter Hill shrouded in a white blanket, and the surrounding landscape, with all its rolling undulations coated in a crisp white layer of snow.

It looked like the 4×4 club had met at the top and local landowners or their children were out on the quads, having great fun.
